The work you will be doing

You will provide specialist and technical advice in respect of the setting, preservation, and enhancement of heritage assets across the Borough.

You will work closely with the Planning Investigations Team to serve enforcement notices, urgent works and repairs and other related notices in liaison with our legal team.

You will also be responsible for preparing and presenting the Council’s case at appeals, inquiries, hearings, Court Hearings and Examinations in Public commensurate to grade; and will support the preparation and presentation of reports to member Working Groups and Committees as required.

There will also be the opportunity to be involved in project work.

What you will bring to this role

You will hold degree/master’s degree in heritage or building conservation or other related degree. You should also be a member or eligible for membership of the Institute of Heritage Building Conservation.

You should have proven experience of cross-team working both internally and externally, with the ability to develop relationships and share knowledge, ideas and expertise and best practice to achieve outcomes.

Ability to undertake independent travel around the Borough is essential.

Company

The council is made up of 47 elected members representing 24 wards and employs more than 250 full-time equivalent staff.

The all-out election held in May 2023 resulted in a change to the coalition administration which now includes the Labour, Swale Independents Alliance and Green groups.

The council voted in October 2021 to move to a committee system of governance from the 2022/23 municipal year and four area committees have been running since September 2020.

Mid Kent Services is a partnership between Swale, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells borough councils. It was formed in 2008, and means the councils work together to reduce costs and improve service delivery and resilience. The partnership delivers a number of fully shared services, and the partners work together on shared procurement exercises and contract monitoring arrangements (like waste and recycling services) and have some shared management arrangements.
