The City of London is looking for two outstanding candidates to be part of its dedicated Development Planning Team for a fixed period of two years. As a member of the RTPI London Planning Team of the Year, you will work proactively and collaboratively with planning colleagues, applicants and stakeholders to deliver genuinely world class development.

The City of London, as the world’s leading financial centre prides itself on providing certainty and a strong and healthy pipeline of development that delivers on the new spatial vision for creating a Destination City. Transforming the Square Mile’s leisure offer, creating a leading destination for UK and international visitors, workers, and residents. Planning in the City reconciles growth and development with the stewardship of a unique heritage alongside the creation of world class sustainable places.

Our areas at Blackfriars, the former Museum of London, Smithfield and Liverpool Street will be undergoing transformational change as the City moves into a new era, impacting the capital more widely and maintaining the City’s position on the global stage.

It is our aim to be an inclusive and sustainable place for all. If you share this vision, then we would like to hear from you.

About You

You will be a member of our Development Management Team who will be working collaboratively with planning colleagues, including Design, Transport, Sustainability, S106, Accessibility and Public Realm Planers, to provide an integrated approach to the development in the City. You will have to operate at a senior planner level and have experience in dealing with large and complex development proposals. You would need to be responsive to the ever evolving nature of the Square Mile and respectful to its rich heritage while being able to demonstrate procedural competence and comprehensive rigour in assessing applications. You will also be expected to have your finger on the pulse of the challenges of Sustainability, Zero Carbon and Circular Economy.

You will be required to hold a degree or equivalent in Town Planning or a related discipline along with proven working experience and membership or eligibility for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute or other relevant professional body.

Effective communicators with excellent interpersonal skills, you will be IT literate with working knowledge of MS Office Suite.

What we do

We like to say this is the City of whatever you make it. And we mean that. The sheer diversity of our responsibilities throws up a career’s worth of opportunities. And all of this stems from our position as the uniquely connected champion of the Square Mile.

The Square Mile is the historic centre of London and is also known as the ‘City’ – the financial and commercial heart of the UK. Our reach extends far beyond the City’s boundaries, making a positive contribution to the private, public, charity and community sectors across the capital and beyond.

This, along with our independent and non-party political voice and convening power, enables us to promote the interests of people and organisations across London and the country and play an influential role on the world-stage.

We’re also responsible for a wide portfolio of work and institutions including the City of London Police, the London Port Health Authority, the Barbican and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We’re also responsible for green spaces such as Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest, as well the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow.

Over the next five years, we will provide leadership at local, London-wide, national, and international levels through the outcomes articulated in our new Corporate Plan 2024 – 2029. This corporate plan provides direction and leadership on the issues that matter, including tackling the climate crisis; growing the economy to support jobs and businesses and fund public services; and embracing new technologies that can transform education and healthcare. This is leadership not just for our generation, but for the generations of the future.

In parallel, we have also developed the City of London Corporation’s first ever five-year People Strategy 2024 – 2029. This strategy will help us create an exceptional work environment where our people feel safe and deeply connected with our vision and values. It will help us create an environment where employees have the skills, recognition, and motivation to deliver our exciting and ambitious Corporate Plan. Our corporate plan and people strategy will, in parallel, enable us to become a truly world-class organisation.

Working together, there is no limit to what we can, and will, achieve.
