We are looking for enthusiastic and professional Planning Enforcement Officers to join our Planning Enforcement Team.

You will share our values, commitment, and motivation to make a difference for our residents, clients, and communities.

About the roles

These are career-graded posts, therefore offering real opportunities for your career development. Appointment at the different entry levels will be dependent upon your knowledge, skills and experience.

You will:

  • be working on a busy caseload and will be tasked with carrying out inspections and assessing developments to ascertain breaches of planning legislation

  • be advising customers of the appropriate course of action to resolve a breach and, when necessary, draft notices, collect evidence and prepare legal proceedings for action against offenders

  • seek solutions to problems in a proactive and proportionate manner at the earliest possible stage, including through involvement in the pre-application service and through mediation with communities to resolve issues outside direct legislative control where necessary.

About you

You will need to hold a relevant degree or a Certificate in Planning Enforcement (or equivalent experience with transferable skills) and demonstrate up-to-date and detailed knowledge and experience in the enforcement of planning law.

Knowledge of the law around protecting and conserving listed buildings would also be desirable.

You will have a strong work ethic, possess good communication and report writing skills and will be keen and ambitious. You will need to be able to work well independently and as part of the team, and with minimal supervision.

Excellent customer service skills will also be required.

You will be required to make site visits in a large rural area and so will need to hold a driving licence and have a car.

About us

Working together across our councils and with our partners in the public, private and voluntary sectors, we provide excellent services to our 190,000 residents across Babergh and Mid Suffolk.

We are proud of the role we play in creating the environment, economy, and communities for our districts. We believe that the heart of Suffolk is an incredibly special place to live and work. With picturesque market towns, 60 conservation areas and with two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) within our districts, it is little wonder that we are consistently within the top 50 places to live in the UK.

Benefits of working with us

  • Great opportunities for learning and development.
  • Suffolk Coaching and Mentoring Partnership
  • Generous leave entitlement (equivalent to 25 days a year, increasing to 30 days after 5 years’ service, plus bank holidays).
  • Competitive Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Wellbeing Support Program
  • Employee Assist Program
  • Health Care Options
