Use all your leadership skills as you take charge of our Planning Service

As our Service Manager, you’ll be responsible for the leadership of the Planning Service, work that covers Planning and Growth and the Planning Policy direct functions. Providing an efficient service that meets our Service Plan objectives, you’ll be working in collaboration with building control partners, ensuring correct procedures are followed, deadlines are met and working practices are regularly reviewed.

Implementing the Council’s delegation arrangements for Development Control, interacting with Councillors and managing the Development Control Committees, you’ll represent the Borough Council at Public Inquiries, and deliver and manage the full range of applications. Committed to creating a working environment where people can achieve the very best, ready to identify talent and support and encourage your colleagues’ development, you’ll also be committed to maintaining fair and consistent HR policies throughout the service.

Your further responsibilities will be many and varied, and include engaging effectively with internal and external customers, setting professional standards, improving individual performance and monitoring service performance to ensure that key milestones and targets are meeting the requirements of the Service Plan. We’ll also expect you to ensure that budget expenditure and income is in accordance with projections, and identify and bid for funding opportunities.

Use your team working skills to develop your colleagues’ potential

To be a success in this role you’ll have a background in Planning or Planning Policy, experience of the management of a team in a direct or support service, the ability to develop great relationships with internal and external customers, and experience of providing advice to a wide variety of stakeholders. A superb project manager with the skills to deliver a variety of complex tasks, we’ll expect you to be capable of reviewing services with a view to creating real improvements.

Evidence of your personal and professional development is essential, and you’ll be at an advantage if you possess a relevant management, professional or technical qualification. An understanding of the role of local government and the environment in which it operates would also be desirable, as would an understanding of the key issues relevant to the delivery of our commitments to the people we represent. Skilled at managing resources effectively, you’ll also understand the principles of performance management, and apply these to deliver improvements in customer service, staff, and processes.
