Are you up for working in London’s most exciting planning units and shaping London’s growth through the new London Plan?

The Mayor’s new London Plan is an ambitious and far-reaching strategy for the future development of London, setting out how Good Growth will enable London to develop in a sustainable way. The role of Team Leader – Strategic Planning (Local Plans) will be central to implementing the London Plan policies through working with boroughs on their local plans and supplementary planning documents and working with London’s neighbouring authorities in the wider south east.

This is a key role within the London Plan and Growth Strategies team where you will manage a team of two officers, leading the Local Plan Conformity and Monitoring function: responding to consultations on local development documents and agree/authorise responses to local planning authorities, within and outside London, ensuring that the full range of Mayoral and functional bodies’ policy interests are taken into account and that comments are sound and fully reflect the Mayor’s policies.

You will have a degree or post-graduate qualification in planning or a related discipline, with eligibility for RTPI membership, and good post-qualification experience in planning or a related team or department.

You will have detailed knowledge and understanding of national, regional, and London strategic planning issues, legal processes and policy trends, and a sound knowledge of local planning issues and processes..  You will have a strong track record of giving high level professional advice on complex or sensitive issues at a senior level and be able to communicate effectively through clear and persuasive oral, written and personal presentations to a range of different audiences.

This role has a particular focus on managing the Mayor’s relationship with the London’s boroughs in their preparation of local planning policies. You will require strong skills and experience of building and managing good relationships, working collaboratively and resolving any conflicts, and consistently taking account of the wider implications of the team’s actions for the GLA.

As part of the role, you will directly manage two members of staff. You will need to demonstrate experience of guiding, motivating and developing staff to achieve high performance. This will include managing different pressures in workload and using the resources of members of the wider team in specialist subject areas.

This role will be based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL).  GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and we are happy to consider flexible working arrangements. We would welcome applications from candidates who are seeking part time work as this role is open to job share.

In addition to a good salary package, we offer an attractive range of benefits including 30 days’ annual leave, interest free season ticket loan, interest free bicycle loan and a career average pension scheme.
