About us:

Central Bedfordshire is an ambitious authority, determined to be an exemplary one. Our strategic location and high quality of life mean we are one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

As a council we face the same challenges every business does - investing in the right places and delivering great results. Except for us, it’s all about our 289,000 residents. We’re totally focussed on helping to improve their lives and making Central Bedfordshire a great place to live and work.

This is a great time to join us on our journey.

More about the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Council’s Gypsy and Traveller Unit.

The Gypsy and Traveller Unit plays a critical role in ensuring Gypsy and Traveller sites across Central Bedfordshire comply with planning legislation. The Unit is a dedicated front-line resource covering a broad range of Gypsy and Traveller taking a balanced approach to engagement, support, compliance and enforcement.  This area of work is both challenging and complex, but success delivers tangible, positive rewards and outcomes. Central Bedfordshire has one of the highest numbers of gypsy and traveller sites within England.

The Role

The role is the senior lead on planning enforcement cases and will provide guidance and direction to the other enforcement officers in the unit on their cases.  The role is responsible for the line management of the enforcement officers.

The position will also have their own small caseload of enforcement cases, in which it is expected that they will be responsible for managing and coordinating the investigation and, as appropriate, the enforcement of alleged breaches of planning control on Gypsy and Traveller sites in Central Bedfordshire. You will ensure that investigations and assessments are undertaken in a timely manner, and you will help to resolve breaches of planning control and when this is not possible you will guide decisions on enforcement action, advise internal and external colleagues and represent the Council when required.

You will be travelling around Central Bedfordshire so you will need access to a vehicle and have a clean driving licence.  You will be able to work remotely from home and we will provide you with the IT equipment to do this, but you will need to be able to access the internet from your home.

About You

You will have demonstrable experience of planning enforcement, ideally in a Local Authority, and the preparation of reports and statements for formal action and serving notices.   Ideally you will also have experience of working with the Gypsy and Traveller community.  Some of the issues you will face will need tenacity, empathy, patience and understanding.

You will need excellent communication, partnership and collaboration skills to work to resolve what can often be very challenging issues.  You will be committed to delivering high standards and delivering excellent customer service and enjoy working in a team focused on delivering tangible outcomes. Ideally you will have experience in managing people.

The Council has set out its vision for Central Bedfordshire to be a great place to live and work.  The vision is about providing opportunities, tackling inequalities, increasing access to services and support, allowing people to feel safe and providing places to live for all our residents.  Often these issues are more complex for our Gypsy and Traveller residents.

This is a chance to make a real difference working within the Gypsy and Traveller Unit to provide effective liaison with Gypsy and Traveller sites across Central Bedfordshire.

What we can offer you

As well as joining a friendly, dedicated, and hardworking team you will have access to numerous benefits, including:
