Job Details

St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas. Set within green belt, off the M25, A1M and M1, the District includes a cathedral, historic city centre and charming villages. Our refurbished offices are in the city centre near to the station (London St Pancras 20 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short, it is a great place to live and work.

As a Planner working at one of the busiest Planning Authorities in the country, with a large team you would benefit from shared knowledge and experience, giving excellent opportunities to develop your career and professional skills, whilst also making decisions that affect how people live and shape the places in the District for the next generation.

We offer a competitive package which also includes learning and development opportunities, essential user car allowance, flexitime or flexible working options (e.g. nine-day fortnight, compressed hours, partial homeworking, school hours/term time working patterns), up to 26 days annual leave, reimbursement of professional fees, pension scheme and leisure and travel discounts.

You will provide professional advice and guidance on all aspects of our service to users to meet statutory and service requirements. You will also lead on the consideration and negotiation of planning applications and provide a decision recommendation on each application within statutory time limits.

Ideally, you will be a member of the RTPI, or be working towards being so, and hold a Town Planning qualification. Working knowledge of the development management process and how these can be applied in practise would be an advantage.

An excellent communicator, you will have an aptitude for using development management software.  A commitment to excellent customer services, a flexible approach to work and the ability to work to very strict deadlines are essential qualities for this post.

In addition to working within a great team and a comprehensive salary, you will have access to:

  • Up to 27.5 days annual leave + bank holidays
  • Up to 18.5% employer contributions (Local Government Pension Scheme)
  • Flexible working options (e.g. hybrid and flexitime)
  • Training and career development opportunities
  • Discounted membership at selected local sports and fitness centres
  • Travel discount and welfare support
