Are you an ambitious planning professional ready to hit the ground running at Runnymede Borough Council? This is the opportunity for you. Not only can we offer great career progression but also exposure to interesting major and strategic applications, alongside applications for residential and changes of use.

We are dynamic and experienced planning team who take pride in achieving high quality design providing excellent customer service.  Runnymede is a stimulating planning environment experiencing a wide variety of development.  We have a newly adopted Local Plan and are home to a Garden Village, Thorpe Park, Wentworth Golf Course and Royal Holloway University all making it an interesting place to be a planner.  Given the different constraints in the Borough the work is varied and the role provides a great opportunity to build a career in planning.

This is the only vacancy in the service, the team is otherwise fully staffed with permanent team members in all other positions.

The potential expansion of Heathrow, the planned delivery of a major flood alleviation scheme in the Borough and a recently Local Plan all present opportunities to broaden your planning skillset and contribute to the Council’s success.  You’ll play a vital part in delivering developments including large scale residential projects, commercial and change of use applications where planning constraints can include the floodplain, green belt or conservation areas.  There are opportunities to develop your management skills as you will be able to supervise junior staff and work positively with a range of stakeholders.

As a senior member of the team, you will be expected to have strong practical experience in Development Management but we are interested to hear from applicants with a range of relevant planning experience. Membership of the RTPI is highly desirable but not necessarily essential. We are seeking a confident, self-motivated and diplomatic person with a ‘can-do’ attitude and the ability to deliver positive outcomes for the future of the Borough.  You should be able to provide clear and accurate advice to stakeholders and show excellent customer care, verbal and written skills.

In addition to a competitive salary, Runnymede Borough Council offers:

  • Generous annual leave of up to 28 days subject to length of service
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Health care scheme (after 3 years service)
  • payment of professional fees
  • Discounted gym membership
  • Discounted cafe on site
  • Where applicable, a relocation benefits package and mortgage/rental equalisation scheme

Our modern offices, based in Surrey on the edge of London, are in Addlestone town centre which is on the main line to London Waterloo and has a new cinema, Waitrose and gym within walking distance.  Access to free parking for part of the week is also available and wellbeing activities such as yoga, led walks and table tennis take place on site.

The Council is happy to receive applications from individuals who are interested in part-time work. If you are interested in working part time hours please state your preferred working pattern in the ‘additional information’ section of the application form.

We would welcome the opportunity to tell you more about the role.  Please call Victoria Gibson, Development Manager (01932 425256) or Ashley Smith, Corporate Head of Development Management and Building Control (01932 425240) to find out more.
