Career Grade Planning Officer - Development Management

Ref. LBHF36074

Salary range: £24,705 - £46,392 per annum

Full Time, Permanent

London

Join the most dynamic and exciting planning department in the UK.  Based in Central London, Hammersmith & Fulham offers career opportunities that are difficult to find elsewhere. It’s a vibrant area with one of the highest-performing planning departments in the country. We deal with a wide range of planning applications from householders and changes of use to complex masterplans within our Opportunity Areas – we have a dense housing stock with rich heritage; a cultural and sporting presence including three major stadiums; and some of the country’s biggest developers very active in our regeneration areas.

This is a challenging and rewarding role working dynamically as part of an area team while working closely with residents and a range of stakeholders. You’ll support your manager and be a trusted member of the team with excellent interpersonal skills and a responsive sounding board with contributions to workloads, deadlines and new ideas. This role also includes a cross team role element which covers a variety of work across the Borough rather than always being based in just one team.

As a career grade planner we will tailor the work to your experience but please be assured there will be opportunities to assist more experienced officers on major and strategic applications and as you develop through our career grade structure there will be opportunities at senior level to lead on more complex borough-wide sites; as well as supervise career grade officers; and sign-off cases under delegated authority.

You will need good written and oral communication skills and be able work collaboratively both within the organisation and with external organisations. You should have an ability to handle conflicting pressured situations whilst putting forward cohesive logical planning arguments on behalf of the Council. You should be able to effectively manage a caseload with multiple deadlines.

We have a supportive management team to help nurture our staff and this job presents an opportunity to develop a range of planning skills including enhancing negotiation as well as mentoring skills. It’s a great opportunity to develop your skills, experience and career.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and make sound recommendations on the planning merits of a range of interesting and challenging development proposals.
  • Assist other planning teams including validation and enforcement investigations as well as helping to prepare committee presentations.
  • Responsibility for a caseload of development proposals and to meet your own performance management and quality.
  • Responsibility for ensuring planning fees and other sources of income are correctly calculated and processed for your caseload.
  • Progress to senior level to sign-off applications within delegated powers.
  • Promote resident and customer satisfaction when delivering services.
  • Develop the full range of professional skills and knowledge to satisfy the requirements of the post.
