Job reference REQ07230

Due to current Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions we are following Government advice and this may result in interviews being held via video call.

We have high aspirations for Rotherham, from delivering major town centre regeneration with 1,000 new homes to the exciting Forge Island cinema and leisure development and the Future High Streets Fund bid to redevelop the town’s markets. Clearly, Rotherham is changing. Driving this change is a council that’s passionate about putting Rotherham on the map for all the right reasons.

Rotherham is a top performing planning authority: winner of the RTPI planning excellence award in 2018, an adopted Local Plan and top of the government’s league table for planning application performance. That’s what makes planning services at Rotherham different; we have talented, passionate people, determined to do their best work for Rotherham, influencing and helping to shape the Borough.

The council has an exciting opportunity for a Planning Technician within its Planning Policy team.

About the role

The post is based in our modern Riverside House offices in the heart of Rotherham, well located for public transport from the Sheffield City Region. We know you must juggle work and life commitments and we will discuss the right mix for you, whether it’s compressed hours or working from home, we are committed to flexible working patterns in our established team. Our Worksmart hybrid working arrangements make working as easy in the home as at the office, so there is some flexibility about where and when you work, and we offer a range of other employee benefits.

COVID-19: Rotherham Council continues to encourage all the behaviours that we know reduces the spread of infection, in line with National Guidance. Therefore, in line with current advice, capacity reductions remain in place in Council buildings and where possible, staff are continuing to work from home in a number of roles, with occasional requirements to attend office locations. We are actively adopting a hybrid way of working which will include both home and office working, based on service and customer needs.

As the Planning Technician, you will work within the Planning Policy team on surveys, research, data collection, monitoring and producing maps and documents.

This will include:

  • Providing technical support to professional planning officers
  • Carrying out site surveys and research, producing data and information
  • Dealing with customers and stakeholders, responding to enquiries and providing advice
  • Maintaining and updating databases and producing monitoring information
  • Administering procurement systems and project budgets
  • Producing technical maps and formatting documents for hard copy and online publication

Practical knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) would be an advantage but is not essential, as training can be provided.

You will play an active role in shaping Rotherham’s sustainable development: meeting the key challenges of continuing the borough’s regeneration, growing the local economy and providing new homes while preserving the best of its environment and responding to climate change.

About you

We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed individual, with the experience, skills, and knowledge to quickly integrate into a busy Planning Policy team. You will hold relevant qualifications and, ideally, have experience of working in a planning service.

You will be a confident all-rounder, with excellent IT skills and an eye for detail, with experience in site surveys, research methods and preparing data and maps.

You will be positive in your approach, comfortable with speaking to a wide variety of people, proactive, and experienced in assisting change management to improve service delivery.
