Senior Sustainability & Climate Change Officer

A progressive and dynamic local authority committed to a robust Climate Change and Sustainability agenda for the built environment urgently requires a Senior Sustainability & Climate Change Officer.

Working within the Conservation, Urban Design and Sustainability Team you will be a specialist responsible for statutory and non-statutory tasks associated with embedding sustainability and addressing Climate Change as part of the planning process and wider corporate objectives.

A key component of this role will include ensuring that all planning permissions and subsequent development are of a high quality and respond to climate change initiatives and deliver policy objectives outlined in national, regional and local planning policy frameworks.

Working collaboratively with senior management and stakeholder representatives, you will inform and contribute to planning policy formulation embedding sustainability initiatives as well as addressing climate change as part of the planning design process.

This will include, appearing as an expert witness at examinations, monitor the collection of the Carbon Offset Fund contributions as well as strategizing the allocation of funds to carbon reduction project across the borough.

Responsibilities include
 

• Provide specialist borough-wide advice on Climate Change and Sustainability
• Evaluate and assess planning applications in relation to Climate Change and Sustainability Criteria
• Contribute to the formulation and draft of Climate Change and Sustainability Chapters as part of the Local Plan
• Coordinating extensive stakeholder and community consultation exercises
• Analysing and evaluating consultation responses
• Monitor the collection of Carbon Offset Fund Contributions and allocation to specific projects.
• Negotiate on complex planning applications to secure design benefits in relation to sustainability and Climate Change matters
• Engaging with and managing external consultants assigned to the delivery of numerous policy studies

Successful candidates will have a degree in Town & Country Planning, Sustainable Architecture, Environmental Sustainability or Energy Planning.

You will have acquired practical experience as a Climate Change and Sustainability Officer at a UK local authority and fully conversant in current sustainability and climate change legislation in conjunction with statutory and non-statutory planning functions.

Moreover, you’ll also have a working knowledge of Carbon Offset Funds with exemplary verbal and written communication skills.
