THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF SERENA’S VISION
The Growth, Planning and Housing directorate in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where innovative and open-minded people bring everything to the cause. Even expertise from surprising places. Take Serena. She is an absolute force of nature at the heart of our Church Street regeneration. And she puts the residents first in everything. Serena’s vision is clear. Regeneration isn’t just about bricks and concrete. It’s about communities. It’s about the environment. It’s about the lives of people and how they feel about where they call home. Serena is their advocate, making sure residents’ voices aren’t just heard, but drive the changes we’re making. The future is safe in her hands.

The Role:
As a Planning Officer in one the area teams you make your own powerful contribution. With a high-profile remit, the Place Shaping and Town Planning Services team work collaboratively with partners and the wider community to ensure Westminster maintains its reputation as a world-class place in which to live, work and visit. You will be dealing with a range of planning application and appeals, pre-application inquiries and providing One Stop Duty Officer advice.

You will have the confidence to steer applicants and  key stakeholders such as major landowners and developers round to your way of thinking – plus the tact to produce correspondence relating to complex and sensitive issues. From defending the Council at appeals, via written representations, informal hearings, and public inquiries through to assisting with the consideration of planning applications. This is uniquely varied role in which you will have the scope to make a considerable impact on the future of Westminster.

About You:
This is an exciting opportunity to make your mark in a progressive team. You will need exceptional communication skills and a team-player attitude. On a practical level, you will have a relevant degree. This post is suitable for a newly graduate planner which starting out in their career or for someone who has some experience in development management with a track record in dealing with a range of applications, including applicant negotiations and
appeals. Crucially, your stakeholder management skills will extend to acting as a trusted partner to residents, businesses, and contractors.

What We Offer:
Westminster is an amazing place. There are 250,000 diverse residents, over 50,000 vibrant and vital businesses, and three-quarters-of-a-million people working here every day. Our mission is to create a city for all. We’re an organisation that wants the very best for our residents: a supportive and safe environment, the chance to grow and learn throughout their lives, to build fantastic careers in world-leading industries, to have access to high quality, affordable homes and to retire into the community with dignity and pride.

At Westminster City Council, we believe everyone should be valued, and we are passionate about our aim to be an inclusive workplace that reflects the communities we serve. As such, we particularly welcome applicants from underrepresented backgrounds, including BAME, LGBTQ+ and those with hidden or visible disabilities. Quite simply, we’re committed to
ensuring all our staff – regardless of gender, age, religion, sexuality, ethnicity, or disability – can succeed.

We appreciate that people work in different ways. As a progressive and innovative organisation, we welcome applications from candidates keen on working in an agile environment. Furthermore, as a Timewise employer we strive to provide flexible working arrangements and an empowering environment that enables you to be your best. With such a commitment to helping our people achieve a great work/life balance, we were delighted to be awarded the ‘Best Health and Wellbeing Initiative’ in the Business Culture Awards 2020, while we were Highly Commended in the ‘Diversity & Inclusion’ category.
