AECOM’s planning team is looking to recruit a Planner, Senior Planner and Principal Planner to play key roles in the delivery of wide-ranging planning consultancy services, including plan making, planning policy studies, planning strategies and development planning. The roles will require post graduate experience in planning consultancy or a public sector planning role, technical knowledge of the planning system together with strong project management skills, excellent team working and communication skills, the capacity to write clear, accessible reports and the ability to deliver to deadlines and to budgets. 

As part of AECOM’s planning team, you could be involved in projects like:

  • Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, East London – where we have secured planning permission for major elements of the London 2012 legacy and continue to advise the Legacy Development Corporation 
  • Northern Arc, Burgess Hill, West Sussex – where our planners have led a multi-disciplinary team providing technical support to Homes England on the delivery of their flagship 3,500 home urban extension
  • Lead Design Organisation for the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCA) in Saudi Arabia – our planning team is supporting the RCA taking forward strategic planning and masterplanning for this UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Neighbourhood planning - Advising local communities as part of the Government’s neighbourhood planning technical support programme, on behalf of the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities
  • Local Plan support – helping planning authorities to produce their Local Plans, including the full range of evidence base studies at the local and sub-regional levels, including growth plans for the Greater Nottingham, Derbyshire and Leicestershire areas

You could be based in our flagship Aldgate Tower Office, or any of our network of local regional offices working on a multi-disciplinary floor alongside multi‐disciplinary planning and design teams on projects of all scales, from neighbourhood plans to local, regional and national strategies.

All our offices offer a flexible approach to working collaboratively amongst the team.  Flexible working arrangements would apply, with the ability to work both from home and any office. We envisage that the role would involve a mix of office-based working and working from home for the foreseeable future. Full time or part time/reduced hours roles would be considered.

Main duties, depending on level of experience, would include:

  • Provide specific technical expertise in planning policy and development planning and work within a team of planners, urban designers, landscape architects, engineers and others on a range of projects including plan making, planning policy, strategy and development planning.
  • Lead the management of small- and medium-sized projects and contribute to the successful management of our largest projects, with some responsibility for budget, programme and general project performance.  Ensure compliance with the company’s Quality Assurance policies and procedures.
  • Support others in the team to identify and pursue business development opportunities, and support the growth of the business through new and repeat clients. Contribute to proposals and qualification documents to secure new commissions.
  • Provide effective representation for the organisation, developing and managing relationships with clients, local authorities and other stakeholders through project work and through attendance at conferences and other networking events.
  • Participate in the successful operation and management of the town planning team, including playing a role in sharing technical knowledge and excellence.
  • Provide assistance to the management team as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Full Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI) preferable or working towards status

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline
  • Post-graduate experience, in a consultancy or public sector role
