Ashford’s Planning and Development Service has a long and proud record of driving high quality place making. This is strongly supported by elected members and acknowledged as an essential component in the delivery of successful and sustainable development and growth.  The Council is forward thinking and ambitious in the way it serves its residents and businesses and is looking to be carbon neutral by 2030.

This is a key post in the Service with you being responsible for leading a team of officers focused on delivering high quality schemes with excellent customer service. Dealing with a small but complex caseload of your own on schemes in urban and rural locations will also challenge and grow your own professional skills.

Working as one of two team leaders in the Planning Applications team, you will be required to work with the Planning Applications & Building Control Manager to provide strategic direction for the team and ensure that the service performs to an excellent level with a consistency that will help secure the Council’s corporate objectives.

There is an expectation that you will work creatively with colleagues within the Service and outside on cross-cutting projects and apply high level personal and professional skills to help achieve results and drive change.

In addition you will provide strong leadership to your team by keeping staff motivated, providing regular review and feedback sessions, identifying career development paths for individuals and opportunities to broaden experience within the service.

Who are we looking for?

You will have a Degree in Planning/Planning Diploma/Professional qualification recognised by Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) or degree not recognised by the RTPI together with a recognised post-graduate qualification. In addition, you will have significant experience of dealing with a wide variety of planning applications including major and complex planning applications and appeals.  You will have experience of managing and mentoring staff.

The post will involve frequent communication with local people, politicians and a range of external organisations and will include some out of hours working, including appearing and presenting at the Planning Committee.

Ashford borough has an excellent quality of life with growing towns, beautiful villages and breath-taking countryside.  It’s close to the coast, has good schools, and its house prices are lower than much of the south east.  London is just 38 minutes from Ashford by train and France just a 30 minute crossing away through the channel tunnel. Ashford is a great place to work because our staff are committed, friendly and passionate.
