About Croydon

As one of London’s largest and most diverse boroughs, Croydon is a fantastic place to live, work and spend time, with all the benefits of close proximity to the rest of London and the south east.

Over the past decade we have seen huge investment, regeneration and growth in our Borough. Croydon remains an attractive and important part of London for ongoing growth and investment – growth from which we want to see all our communities benefit.

However, as a council the impacts of the pandemic, austerity and our current financial challenges has brought significant changes to the way we operate and the resources available. We must change to focus on the needs our residents are facing today, while making sure we are a financially sustainable council by 2024.

This brings though, opportunities for those who want to work in a fast moving environment, focused on improvement and delivering better services. With a newly appointed Chief Executive bringing stability and inclusive leadership, Croydon is an exciting place to work, however, it isn’t for the faint hearted. You will need to be ambitious, passionate about planning, demonstrate strong personal responsibility and a desire to deliver great places.

We have a great planning management team, who lead, inspire and believe in Croydon.  If you want a challenge with great job satisfaction, there is no better opportunity than Croydon.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be required to further enhance service delivery for all our customers, focussing specifically on the realisation of sustainable growth, firmly embedded in high standards of design and the maximisation of social, economic and environmental benefits. You will have line management responsibility for a Planning Applications Team (up to 15 members of staff) and will be responsible for providing guidance and support on all aspects of their work (including major projects) and will take decisions on a wide range of delegated casework. You will be a crucial member of the Development Management Leadership Team to ensure a seamless response to the challenges and opportunities that inevitably arise.

You will work alongside the Head of Development Management and the other team leaders to lead all types of projects, manage workload pressures, work allocation and prioritisation, budgets and consistency of process/decision making. You will be recognised as an important ambassador for the service and the Council more widely.

The successful candidate will need to be a talented, politically astute, enthusiastic, motivated, experienced and knowledgeable individual who demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of development management and planning policy. Moreover, you will need to be resilient in a pressurised environment and will need to be exceptionally skilled in the various negotiation and communication techniques (across all mediums). You will be expected to communicate with gravitas and confidence, explaining complex planning procedures and issues, albeit in a user-friendly manner whilst adapting style and information offered according to the audience.

We run regular training and development sessions on a wide range of planning and development matters, bringing in external speakers as well as in house experts and we encourage staff to take part in the organisation and topic selection. Each and every one of our staff play a vital role in delivering a planning service, if you enjoy making a difference, being part of a team and love planning, - Croydon delivers.

If you are interested in joining us we would be pleased to hear from you.
