This is a very exciting time to work at Sedgemoor as we have an opportunity within our planning policy team for an Environmental Planning Officer who will provide specialist advice and support to all aspects of planning. The District hosts a number of international and nationally important nature conservation areas including parts of the world-famous Somerset Levels and Moors. It also includes parts of the Severn Estuary as well as two areas of outstanding natural beauty.

We are looking for a suitably qualified person with a degree in town planning/ Environmental Science (or equivalent).

The role will involve assisting the wider team with the review of the adopted local plan, this may be significantly different given the current proposals for changes to the planning system. Whatever form the next plan takes, the area faces key challenges of accommodating high levels of housing and employment growth whilst protecting the natural environment and responding to the challenges of climate change. Key tasks will include assessing environmental impacts of developments, undertaking detailed strategic environment assessment and sustainability appraisals of plans or programmes (e.g. Local Plan, Neighbourhood Plans), and responding to the challenges of climate change. Formulating policy and supporting delivery of key objectives in relation to the environment (e.g. green infrastructure, accessible natural green space, and biodiversity net gain) will also be an important aspect of the role.

The successful applicant will need to be enthusiastic, have a flexible approach to working hours and be a team player.

We offer a competitive salary, generous annual leave allowance and the opportunity to join the Local Government Pension scheme. We also operate flexible working hours and are moving to an agile working environment that will provide opportunities for home working.

Please be aware that due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, the interviews for this post will be carried out virtually.
