Trainee Planner / Planner / Senior Planner / Principal Planner

East Staffordshire Borough Council is the place to grow your planning career. Where better to find your next challenge than at a Council who is a founding member of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership and one that is positive about planning?

The Council serves a population of approximately 110,000, is part of the National Forest and has a mix of urban and rural areas. The principal town of Burton upon Trent is known for its brewing heritage and the smaller settlement of Uttoxeter is a market town. The rural areas are varied and characterised by small hamlets and villages, often historic in origin and containing substantial conservation areas. You’ll have the opportunity to experience the varied nature of applications that are reflective of the character of the Borough.

The Borough Council has a very effective Development Control Team. Here’s your chance to experience or play a leading role in development control and planning enforcement. Be involved in a variety of applications, ranging from major residential and commercial proposals to householders and agricultural, schemes relating to tourism and visitor attractions, renewable energy, town centre uses, infrastructure projects and other applications.

We are excited by the opportunities that can be captured through managing change. You’ll be joining a top-quartile-performing Council with a strong local plan adopted in 2015. We’ve also made 15 neighbourhood plans.

Continuous Professional Development is important to us; we will support your career progression whether you join us with a RTPI-recognised degree or are working towards this and/or hold MRTPI status.

You’ll bring to the role a proven track record in planning delivery. This will include dealing with the public, investigative work and providing evidence. Crucially, you have experience of formal interviewing and the use of regulatory powers relating to Section 106 matters in local government. You should be proficient in map reading and have a detailed understanding of architectural plans and drawings. A team player, you demonstrate good communication skills, exemplary time management and a flair for innovative thinking.

In return, we offer a generous package of benefits, including flexible working hours, car necessity scheme allowance, payment of professional fees, free car parking, homeworking and a local government pension scheme.
