About us

Hillingdon Council: Putting our Residents first.

About the role

With a review of our Local Plan underway, this is a great time to join Hillingdon’s planning policy team and contribute to our ambitious plans for the future of the Borough. From managing the impacts of Heathrow, protecting 5,000 hectares of Green Belt or re-imagining Uxbridge Metropolitan town centre, the wide range of planning issues makes Hillingdon an engaging place to further your career in town planning.

This role will sit within the Council’s Planning Policy team. You will be responsible for leading on core areas of policy formulation, including the commissioning and collation of evidence. You will work with colleagues and stakeholders to build consensus on key policy issues and prepare documents for consultation and submission. You will also provide policy support on a wide range of planning applications.

This is a fixed-term role for two years supporting the preparation of the Local Plan from its first consultation through to submission and examination.

About you

This role would suit a planning policy professional with substantial knowledge and experience. You will take a leading role in the planning policy team providing professional advice, working on our Local Plan evidence base and other supporting documents.

The right candidate must work effectively with a range of stakeholders, demonstrate excellent project management and coordination skills, and a willingness to take the initiative. The ability to write high-quality reports and explain complex planning issues clearly to a wide range of stakeholders is also essential. You must have an accredited degree in town planning or equivalent experience in the field.

Working Arrangements

The response to COVID-19 is shaping the way many organisations work. The recent roll-out of Microsoft 365 within the organisation has transformed the ability of some of our staff to work remotely while continuing to maintain the same high level of service delivery to our residents; we also recognise the value of some working time spent in the office.

Hillingdon has recently achieved ‘Timewise’ accreditation which endorses our ongoing commitment to flexible working. A refreshed flexible working policy along with wraparound wellbeing policies will be launched during the summer.

What we offer

We offer a range of Company benefits. These vary according to the business area and role but may include:

  • local government average salary pension scheme
  • free parking (4 days a week) if based at the Civic Centre
  • a 36-hour week for all full-time staff
  • generous holiday entitlement: a minimum 25 days a year (plus bank holidays), rising to 28 days after five years' service. For more senior positions holiday entitlements can rise to a maximum of 36 days
  • career breaks
  • flexible working hours
  • season ticket loan
  • access to a Credit Union
  • access to a wide range of training and courses
  • discount on a variety of Adult Education courses run by the Council
