The City of Placemaking - Exciting Opportunity to Join the Design Team

Two exciting opportunities has arisen to join the Development Design Team in the Development Division at the City of London.

The City of London is the historic and commercial core of the capital and is the world’s leading business centre.  Planning in the City reconciles growth and development with the stewardship of a unique historic townscape and the creation of new world class places.  The City has unrivalled exciting opportunities for both new cutting edge architecture and the conservation of the best of the past as part of building inclusive places for all.

The posts will involve providing urban design advice in the management, evaluation and negotiation of a wide range of planning applications for significant development schemes. You will be dealing with a diverse range of developments, including high profile, often complex schemes and where necessary expected to formulate and articulate alternative design solutions. The duties will offer opportunities to develop other non-casework initiatives such as policy and guidance formation, 3D modelling and area wide and issue-based studies, masterplans and strategies.

We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants with a holistic approach to all aspects of planning and development management with an understanding of the inter-relationship of urban design with wider planning issues including uses, pandemic recovery, sustainability (including climate change resilience and Zero Carbon), microclimate, inclusive access, transport etc.

The post requires a degree or equivalent in Town Planning, Urban Design or Architecture along with proven working experience and membership or eligibility for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)

An effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and presentational skills, you will be IT literate. A commitment to excellent customer services, a flexible approach to work and the ability to work to very strict deadlines are essential qualities for this role.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 1 September 2021.

Interviews will be scheduled for week commencing 20 September 2021.

What we do

We like to say this is the City of whatever you make it. And we mean that. The sheer diversity of our responsibilities throws up a career’s worth of opportunities. And all of this stems from our position as the uniquely connected champion of the Square Mile.

The Square Mile is the historic centre of London and is also known as the ‘City’ – the financial and commercial heart of the UK. Our reach extends far beyond the City’s boundaries, making a positive contribution to the private, public, charity and community sectors across the capital and beyond.

This, along with our independent and non-party political voice and convening power, enables us to promote the interests of people and organisations across London and the country and play an influential role on the world-stage.

We’re also responsible for a wide portfolio of work and institutions including the City of London Police, the London Port Health Authority, the Barbican and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We’re also responsible for green spaces such as Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest, as well the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow.

Whatever opportunity you are considering as a next step, we are pleased that you are exploring the City of London Corporation.

Over the next five years, we will provide leadership at local, London-wide, national, and international levels through the outcomes articulated in our new Corporate Plan 2024 – 2029. This corporate plan provides direction and leadership on the issues that matter, including tackling the climate crisis; growing the economy to support jobs and businesses and fund public services; and embracing new technologies that can transform education and healthcare. This is leadership not just for our generation, but for the generations of the future.

In parallel, we have also developed the City of London Corporation’s first ever five-year People Strategy 2024 – 2029. This strategy will help us create an exceptional work environment where our people feel safe and deeply connected with our vision and values. It will help us create an environment where employees have the skills, recognition, and motivation to deliver our exciting and ambitious Corporate Plan. Our corporate plan and people strategy will, in parallel, enable us to become a truly world-class organisation.

Working together, there is no limit to what we can, and will, achieve.
