Sheffield City Council has a commitment to sustainable growth to enable the creation of great places to live and work. Town Planning is vital to the provision of new homes and jobs.  In this role you will be working in the Forward & Area Planning Section of one of the country’s largest planning authorities.

We are seeking an enthusiastic planner to join us initially for 12 months. This temporary post has arisen due to the current high volume of work associated with production of the city’s new Local Plan. The post will suit a planner with 3 or more years’ experience of working in a policy team in a busy planning department. You will be responsible for the development of planning policies and the identification of suitable land to meet the city’s development needs over the next 15-20 years. We are particularly looking for someone with experience of retail/town centre policy but this is not essential.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required for this post. Good negotiation and project management skills are also essential qualities. You should be customer focussed and be a strong team player. You will need a good working knowledge of current planning legislation and be able to demonstrate an awareness of ongoing legislative changes and their implications. You should possess excellent ICT skills and a working knowledge of GIS would be an advantage. Analysis and evaluation of planning information will be an important part of the role and you should be able to produce work that demonstrates a good attention to detail. The ability to manage a high workload to achieve specific deadlines is essential.

Officers are working remotely from the office for the foreseeable future, however you would be expected to be based locally given the anticipated gradual easing of Covid 19 restrictions and the need to carry out site visits within Sheffield City Council’s administrative area.

We are committed to fairness and social justice and welcome applications from everyone. We value our diverse workforce and aim to work together to make the most of our differences. Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants, who meet the essential criteria of this job, are guaranteed an interview.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities, which benefit you and the Council
