An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Planning Policy team for the appointment of a planning officer to add to our experienced and busy section. We are looking for a qualified planner already working in planning and looking to further their professional career or a recent graduate of an RTPI accredited course.

You will be joining a high achieving team of eight planners who have successfully adopted the first part of the Local Plan (Strategy and Sites) a few years ago and are now in the process of preparing the second part (Development Management Policies). Over the course of the next 18 months, you can expect to take an active role in progressing the Regulation 19 consultation, Submission and Examination process.

You will also be involved in a range of other planning policy related work. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following relevant skills:

  • knowledge of relevant planning issues;
  • communication skills (both written and oral);
  • organisational skills with the ability to manage workload and time effectively to meet challenging deadlines;
  • ability to work independently and proactively on own initiative with minimum supervision;
  • able to work effectively as a team member; and
  • ability to undertake data collection, statistical analysis and research efficiently and accurately.

These skills will be necessary in order for you to be able to successfully undertake the following professional duties:

  • contributing to the preparation of a new evidence base;
  • drafting Local Plan policies and supplementary planning documents;
  • monitoring the effectiveness of adopted policies;
  • assisting in carrying out public consultation; and
  • providing planning policy advice to Development Management, elected councillors, parish councils and other external stakeholders.

We are based in the attractive riverside Council Offices close to Guildford Town Centre.  Over the last year the Council has been set up for remote working with a laptop provided.  It is expected that a mixture of home and office working will remain in the future.  As a Council we offer employee benefits including a career average earnings pension scheme, generous annual leave and flexible working scheme.

If you require further information on the role please contact Laura Howard, Principal Planning Policy Officer, on (01483) 444626 or at Laura.Howard@guildford.gov.uk.

A basic disclosure security check will be required for the successful application.

Closing date for the application is 26 July 2021
