Medway is an ambitious Authority with plans to respond positively to the needs of a growing population and to continue to build on the ambitions of the Council’s regeneration strategy to be known as a successful waterfront University city noted for its revitalised urban centres, its stunning natural and historic assets and countryside.

Medway is an exciting place to work for an energised planning professional and has a strong regeneration agenda with large areas of our waterfront currently being regenerated, such as the award-winning Rochester Riverside and with further opportunities at Strood with stunning riverside views across to Rochester Castle and Cathedral.  We have 5 Town Centres, with very different and distinct characters and with Chatham being the city centre.  We have recently been awarded £10m from the future High Streets Fund for work to Chatham to add to our already ambitious programme of work, which is being led by Medway Council through its purchase of the Pentagon Shopping Centre and the current exciting and ambitious redevelopment programme for the riverside being undertaken by the Council’s development arm.  The Council has also been successful in a Heritage Action Zone bid for the historic Chatham Intra riverside area which links Chatham to Rochester.

In order to help us meet our challenging housing needs figure the Council is looking to expand a couple of large villages on the Hoo peninsula to provide a stunning new market town and to help realise that ambition has been successful in a £170m Housing Infrastructure Fund bid from Homes England.  That funding will enable the forward funding of infrastructure to deliver a new road onto the peninsula; to bring back into passenger use an existing freight railway line and provide a brand-new station; and to provide strategic environmental mitigation including the provision of significant areas of community parks, green and blue infrastructure and ecology mitigation.

Medway have a vacancy within our development management team following the recent retirement of an experienced Senior Planner.  We are looking for planners with experience and energy, with a can-do delivery attitude, but who understand the need to deliver quality as part of that regeneration agenda while also protecting all that is wonderful in Medway within our historic and natural environment.  Our Planning team includes urban designers, landscape officers, conservation officers, sustainable drainage officers, policy and DM planners, but being a unitary authority, we work closely with our colleagues in highways, environmental health, public health, education as well as the Council’s development company.

If you have experience in Development Management, have energy and enthusiasm and have that passion for planning and are excited about making a difference and being part of the ambition to continue to make Medway a great place to live, work, learn and visit then we want to hear from you.

There will be a need for site visits and the planning service is based at Gun Wharf, we would be happy to consider flexible ways of working particularly in relation to home working opportunities.
