The Role

Supervising a team of planning and planning enforcement officers, you’ll research, consider and report on a wide range of applications, major development proposals and enforcement matters. This will involve you in preparing appeal statements and appearing at public inquiries and hearings, as well as attending committees and advising other Council departments on planning matters. You’ll also deputise for the Development Management Team Leader and Planning Enforcement Lead in their absence.

Checking applications for validation, you’ll draft reports and recommend whether applications are granted or refused, and when enforcement action should be taken. Your other responsibilities will include inspecting plans, carrying out site visits and assessing development proposals and possible breaches of planning control. And, acting as a change champion, you’ll also have an opportunity to lead service improvement projects.

About You

With a Planning degree or equivalent, you’ll also need licentiate membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (or equivalent), and evidence of relevant continuous professional development.

You’ll bring significant planning experience, some of which should have been gained in a development management (including planning enforcement) environment. With this, you should have an excellent working knowledge of current planning legislation and practice. And, with the ability to construct concise reports that present clear and persuasive arguments, you should be able to give both formal and informal presentations.

Ideally, you’ll also have a working knowledge of London planning issues and historic buildings and conservation areas, with some experience of arranging small scale contracts for consultancy advice.
