Job Details

Join us for new challenges and opportunities to grow your planning experience while making a lasting impact on one of London’s most vibrant and densely populated boroughs.

About Us

At Kensington and Chelsea, we have unmatched built heritage sitting alongside iconic retail centres, a vibrant specialist employment market, an international medical quarter and world class cultural attractions. We also have many challenges facing us. We’re not only home to the wealthy but also to some of the most deprived wards in London. So, we’re committed to delivering growth in the Borough, with homes for all, and have started our own ambitious housing programme. We’re developing new ways of engaging with all our residents and providing high-quality accessible infrastructure for now and future generations.

We’re looking for experienced and confident planners to help us make this happen.

As a high-performing planning department we deal with a wide range of applications, making us one of the busiest planning authorities in the country. We’re a dynamic forward-thinking team with a can-do approach and are always striving to improve our service. We’re also proud of our learning and development commitment and take pride in growing our own to create a strong and resilient spatial planning team.

Putting communities first and working together with respect and integrity are our values, and we want people who share these to come and work with us.

The Role

You’ll research, consider and report on a full range of applications, major development proposals and enforcement matters under the Planning Acts and related legislation. This will involve you in preparing appeal statements and appearing at public inquiries and hearings, as well as attending committees and advising other Council departments on planning matters.

Dealing with a variety of pre-application enquiries, you’ll advise applicants and other customers on whether permission is likely to be granted and how schemes may be altered to gain consent. Your other responsibilities will include inspecting plans, making site visits and assessing development proposals and possible breaches of planning control. You'll be on a two year fixed term contract

About You

With a Planning degree or equivalent, you’ll also need licentiate membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (or equivalent), and evidence of relevant continuous professional development.

You’ll bring significant planning experience, some of which should have been gained in a development management (including planning enforcement) environment. With this, you should have an excellent working knowledge of current planning legislation and practice. You’ll also need a methodical, thorough approach, along with the ability to construct concise reports presenting present clear and persuasive arguments and give both formal and informal presentations.

Ideally, you’ll also have a sound knowledge of London planning issues, with a working knowledge of historic buildings and conservation areas, along with experience of preparing evidence for public inquiries or presenting and answering at committee.

In return, you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays.

We are committed to promoting equality and respecting diversity and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
