Contract: Maternity Cover – fixed term for 12 months
Quote ref: P000215

The Planning Appeals and Enforcement Team is a key part of the Council’s Development Management Service and is responsible for investigating all breaches of planning control in the Borough. It comprises two Planning Enforcement Officers reporting to the Team Leader (Appeals & Enforcement), and two planning officers within a wider team of heritage and compliance officers.  We are now seeking someone who will enjoy the challenge of working in a performance driven environment where service quality is paramount.

This post would suit a Planning Enforcement Officer seeking a new challenge or somebody with general experience in the built environment/law enforcement/regulatory services. However, if you have a genuine interest in town planning and are motivated by the prospect of playing a key role in protecting the natural and built environment, you are also encouraged to apply as informal training will be given.

You will have a diplomatic approach to resolving sensitive issues, and ideally some experience in the collation of evidence/record-keeping. You will be able to keep detailed records and manage a large and varied workload.  You will deal with a range of planning enforcement matters across the Borough, which includes the urban area of Bedford and Kempston and an extensive rural hinterland with several conservation areas and listed buildings.

For further information on the post please contact Peter White (01234) 718555 or Ian Johnson (01234) 718559.

Bedford Borough features a wealth of rural villages set around the urban areas of Bedford and Kempston. The rural areas are characterised by timber framed and stone buildings, many with thatched roofs, whilst the urban areas have a wealth of late 18th and 19th century buildings. Bedford Borough Council has a strong commitment to the protection of its 27 conservation areas and over 1300 listed buildings.
The Council is currently rated as ‘excellent’ following a recent Comprehensive Performance Assessment.
