The City of the Future - Exciting Opportunity to Join a Dynamic Planning Team

An opportunity has arisen to join the Planning Team in the Development Division at the City of London.  In uncertain times, the City of London prides itself on providing certainty and a strong and healthy pipeline of development is being negotiated.

The City of London is the historic and commercial core of the Capital and a world leading financial centre.  Planning in the City reconciles growth and development with the stewardship of a unique heritage alongside the creation of world class sustainable places.  The City has unrivalled exciting opportunities for new cutting-edge architecture and the conservation of the best of the past.  It is our aim to be an inclusive and sustainable place for all. If this aligns with you, then we would like to hear from you.

The post holders would undertake the evaluation and negotiation of a wide range of planning applications. We are seeking Planning Officers with their finger on the pulse of the challenges of Sustainability, Zero Carbon and Circular economy and responsive to the ever evolving nature of the Square Mile but respectful to its rich heritage. You will need to be able to demonstrate procedural competence and comprehensive rigour in assessing applications. We are looking for planners who focus on the bigger picture rather than be preoccupied by narrow issues, creative and agile planners seeking solutions rather than solely identifying problems.

The post requires a degree or equivalent in Town Planning, Urban Design or Architecture along with proven working experience and membership or eligibility for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).

An effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, you will be IT literate with working knowledge of MS Office Suite.

A commitment to excellent customer services, a flexible approach to work and the ability to work to very strict deadlines are essential qualities for this role.

Closing date: 12 noon, 13 July 2020.

What we do

We like to say this is the City of whatever you make it. And we mean that. The sheer diversity of our responsibilities throws up a career’s worth of opportunities. And all of this stems from our position as the uniquely connected champion of the Square Mile.

The Square Mile is the historic centre of London and is also known as the ‘City’ – the financial and commercial heart of the UK. Our reach extends far beyond the City’s boundaries, making a positive contribution to the private, public, charity and community sectors across the capital and beyond.

This, along with our independent and non-party political voice and convening power, enables us to promote the interests of people and organisations across London and the country and play an influential role on the world-stage.

We’re also responsible for a wide portfolio of work and institutions including the City of London Police, the London Port Health Authority, the Barbican and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We’re also responsible for green spaces such as Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest, as well the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow.

Over the next five years, we will provide leadership at local, London-wide, national, and international levels through the outcomes articulated in our new Corporate Plan 2024 – 2029. This corporate plan provides direction and leadership on the issues that matter, including tackling the climate crisis; growing the economy to support jobs and businesses and fund public services; and embracing new technologies that can transform education and healthcare. This is leadership not just for our generation, but for the generations of the future.

In parallel, we have also developed the City of London Corporation’s first ever five-year People Strategy 2024 – 2029. This strategy will help us create an exceptional work environment where our people feel safe and deeply connected with our vision and values. It will help us create an environment where employees have the skills, recognition, and motivation to deliver our exciting and ambitious Corporate Plan. Our corporate plan and people strategy will, in parallel, enable us to become a truly world-class organisation.

Working together, there is no limit to what we can, and will, achieve.
