About Low Carbon

Founded in 2011, Low Carbon is a privately-owned investment company committed to the development and operation of renewable energy power production at scale. Low Carbon invests into both renewable energy developers and projects across a range of proven renewable energy technologies including solar, wind, waste to energy, energy storage and energy efficiency. Low Carbon has a strong track record in the development, construction, financing and management of renewable energy assets. For UK solar alone, Low Carbon has funded more than 320MW. Low Carbon remains involved in the projects for the long term with a dedicated Asset Management team that manages assets on balance sheet and for third parties (unlisted and listed).

With more than £400 million of capital deployed into renewable energy investments and an expanding development pipeline we expect our performance only to increase as needs for renewable energy grow and the opportunities for our investor partners gather pace.

Our Team

Low Carbon are based in Berkeley Street in Mayfair, London. We have a small team managing our SPVs from Oxygen House in Exeter and we are now expanding the development team within our recently opened office in Gloucester.

Our UK Development team consists of a small group of experts, working closely together to develop a portfolio of subsidy-free solar and battery storage projects throughout the UK. We are looking for experienced independent people who are driven, collaborative, creative and fun to work with.

This is a great opportunity to join a new team, and to make a significant difference in the take up of renewable energy in the UK.

Scope of role

We are looking for someone to assist the planning and delivery team in helping to turn development opportunities into shovel-ready projects, assisting the planning process, and working through the necessary due diligence processes. You will support the team on all aspects of planning and delivery and converting opportunities into projects that are ready to build. You will be interested in applying your skills to the development and build out of a portfolio of new utility scale solar and battery storage projects throughout Great Britain.

Key responsibilities:

  • Carrying out initial high-level appraisals of opportunities that the site origination team may be considering taking forward for development
  • Assisting the Planning Managers in the preparation of planning applications for our projects
  • Assisting the Stakeholder Engagement Manager in mapping out and engaging with individuals and organisations affected by our projects
  • Helping to deal with issues as they arise on projects in the planning application process and in the post-planning process such as the discharging of planning conditions
  • Interacting with our CAD partners to ensure the various plans and designs through the development process are updated, correct and uniform
  • Maintaining our document storage systems and ensuring that things are where they should be
  • Inputting into the wider development strategy for each project and providing project information to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensuring project management systems are kept up to date and holding colleagues to account for its upkeep
  • Maintaining a continued focus on process improvements – the way that it was done yesterday is not necessarily the best way to do it tomorrow
  • Generating template documents and disseminating them to the wider Development and Investment Teams

Employee Benefits

  • 25 days holiday plus your birthday off
  • Bupa private healthcare
  • Contributory pension
  • Cycle scheme
  • Perkbox for commercial discounts and perks
  • Low Carbon promotes employee wellbeing, and values diversity. We are open to discussing working flexibly for this role, so please let us know if this is important to you.

Job requirements

Experience / Requirements

  • Ideally you will have previous experience appraising development opportunities for renewable energy projects
  • Having a RTPI-recognised undergraduate degree qualification would be desirable
  • Full driver’s license
  • Being computer literate is essential and familiarity with cloud-based project management software would be useful
  • Proven ability to work and communicate with remote colleagues
  • We will consider an outstanding graduate; but you will need to make us comfortable that you will excel in a fast-paced work environment with minimal supervision

The Person

  • Distinguish yourself from your peers who may be looking to go into local government or planning consultancy roles. This is an opportunity to work in-house, for a developer and really understand how to create a project from nothing.
  • This is a new team. You will need to be adept at carving out your role within it and building trust with your team members
  • You’ll have good powers of persuasion as you’ll need to convince people senior to you to provide you with the information you need to do your job while they are busy doing their own
  • You’ll be highly organised and be comfortable working with multiple projects and priorities
  • You’ll be able to make use of technology to increase efficiency
  • You won’t sit back and wait for things to happen and you’ll be comfortable taking on responsibility and making decisions
  • You’ll be part of a small close-knit team and you will be happy to get your hands dirty at times
  • Strong written and verbal communications and presentation skills
