Are you passionate and knowledgeable about historic places? Do you have experience of managing heritage projects or grant schemes? Are you keen to engage with the local community to regenerate their High Street?

This post will manage delivery of an exciting project (total value £4m) jointly funded by Kettering Borough Council and Historic England to improve and enhance Kettering’s High Street and Conservation Area through a programme of heritage regeneration. High Streets Heritage Action Zones (HSHAZ) is Historic England’s national scheme investing £95m to provide support for historic high streets and the communities who use them so they can adapt to the challenges they face. The project will deliver physical improvements and cultural activities to regenerate the high street and restore local historic character. The revival will become the catalyst for wider regeneration, with heritage and local character at its heart.

The Project Manager will develop and manage the 4-year programme set out in the HSHAZ Delivery Plan, encouraging heritage-led regeneration and co-ordinating the successful delivery of a range of projects, including shopfront and historic building improvement schemes, conversion of vacant units to alternative uses, and public realm improvements. The post will require someone with broad experience in the conservation/heritage sector including management of change to heritage assets; experience of managing grant funded programmes; and experience of working with multiple stakeholders as part of a heritage-related project.

The post holder will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline and will need to have excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to be particularly effective at building and strengthening partnerships, and engaging and influencing the wider community. The HSHAZ programme is a high-profile strategic project and the Project Manager role will involve a high level of responsibility and challenge while providing significant job satisfaction by providing quality heritage and community outcomes.

Based in the Council’s Development Services Team, the post holder will work closely with colleagues in Economic Development, Building Control, and Community Development and with officers from Historic England’s Midlands regional team. Kettering is an exciting place to work with significant growth taking place and within the Oxford-Cambridge Arc but with challenges of a declining High Street and Town Centre. This role will have a significant input in helping to regenerate these areas.

The interview process will be managed by Kettering Borough Council in partnership with Historic England.
