Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is seeking driven and ambitious planners, who really want to reinterpret the ideals of the Garden City for the 21 st century. As part of our vision for the future, we currently have an excellent opportunity for a Principal Planner.

We have submitted our Local Plan for examination. In order to accommodate housing and employment growth over the coming years, we have proposed the release of land from the Green Belt as urban extensions and a new settlement. This results in huge challenges for the borough in ensuring we deliver high quality development with supporting infrastructure whilst maintaining the quality of the environment. As our Principal Planner for policy, you will play a vital role in achieving this.

We’ll look to you to take a leading role in securing the adoption of the Plan and subsequently ensuring the objectives of the Plan are delivered. You will be responsible for supervising and motivating staff and ensuring deadlines are met. Excellent project and staff management skills are essential. You’ll use your specialist policy knowledge to quickly become an integral member of the team. You’ll need to have excellent analysis and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to appreciate the long-term implications of the work you’re doing.

As our Principal Planner, you’ll join a forward-thinking council that puts their customers first. We know that in order to provide the best for our residents, businesses and visitors, we need to do the same for our people. We have set out to make our workplaces vibrant and happy places to be, places where we feel safe, content and valued. From a generous annual leave entitlement, to flexible working and opportunities to buy and sell leave, our benefits package provides a great work life balance.

If you are interested in working in an ambitious authority and helping to shape our New Town and Garden City environments, we want to hear from you.

Closing date for applications is 20th September 2019.

Assessments and interviews will be held on 3rd October 2019.
