Job Details

This newly created position is an exciting opportunity for an experienced planner who is looking to progress their career in a high-profile strategic planning role.  The position has been created to provide additional capacity to drive forward the council’s ambitions for growth and great places.

You will support the Team Leader in contributing fully to planning policy, including the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, guidance and neighbourhood planning, supervising others as required.  You will work with partners across programmes, planning applications, projects and funding bids, to ensure they are effectively supported, to help accelerate the delivery of housing, economic development, transport and town centre regeneration.

About you:

You are an effective and proven planner with strong policy and development experience who is a self-starter, highly motivated, organised and enthusiastic about planning and its role in place-making, with a passion to help deliver an effective and responsive strategic planning function. This role will play a key part in the delivery of the Deal 2030 and the growth of Wigan Borough.

You will possess excellent communication skills and the ability and confidence to work well in partnership and collaboratively on highly complex matters, with other disciplines within the council and across organisational boundaries, to advance the borough’s best interests.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Council of the Year’ at the 2019 LGC Awards and has recently published The Deal 2030, our ambitious plan for our borough.  We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

Wigan is a great place to live and work and the council truly values and recognises its staff as its greatest asset, actively encouraging innovation, striving to deliver outstanding services and celebrating our successes.  The planning service is merged with new build housing and regeneration to form a Growth and Housing Service.  This joins up expertise and assets to help deliver on the council’s priorities for growth and great places, connected infrastructure and supporting healthier lifestyles.

As an employer we like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits.

Closing Date: Sunday 8th September 2019

Interview date: Monday 23rd September 2019
