Huntingdonshire District Council aims to provide high quality services and this means we need to employ and retain talented and dedicated people. Situated within the heart of the Cambridge-Peterborough Growth Area, Huntingdonshire is a beautiful district that boasts thriving market towns and many attractive villages, each with its own identity. We are a dynamic and progressive local authority, we care about our natural and built environment, and we care about all our customers.

The Job

We have a fantastic opportunity for a dynamic and energetic planning professional with strong leadership and managerial attributes, who can demonstrate they have the qualities and potential to rise to the challenge of leading one of our Development Management Area teams.

The ideal candidate will be expected to demonstrate how they will effectively lead, direct and manage an area team of five planners responsible for assessing and determining planning applications ranging from householders to large schemes of up to and over 200 residential units, dealing with planning appeals, taking part in planning training sessions and representing the service at our monthly Development Management Committees.

The ideal candidate will have to demonstrate how they are going to effectively implement the council’s place shaping agenda and its objective to be positive and proactive in terms of allowing the 'right schemes' in the 'right places' at the ‘right times’, as well as stopping harmful development proposals.

The Team

You will lead a team of five planning professionals (mixture of senior development management officers and development management officers), including joint responsibility of leading and managing one technical support officer. There will be regular cross working with other internal council teams (such as planning admin, strategic team, heritage conservation and planning enforcement, as well as external bodies, for example the Environment Agency and Wildlife Trust.

The Area and the Organisation

Situated within the heart of the Cambridge-Peterborough Growth Area, Huntingdonshire is a beautiful district that boasts thriving market towns and many attractive villages, each with its own identity. The Anglo-Saxon and Roman history is prevalent throughout the district in its historic buildings, churches and fine houses. The varied landscape of the district is comprised of the fens to the north, which are in certain parts below sea level, and gentle rolling landscape to the south.

The following values and behaviours encompass the vision we have for our organisation and employees:

  • Inspiring - We have genuine pride and passion for public service; doing the best we can for customers matters to us all.
  • Collaborative - We achieve much more by working together, and this allows us to provide the best service for customers.
  • Accountable - We take personal responsibility for our work and our decisions, and we deliver on our commitments to customers.
  • Respectful - We respect people’s differences and are considerate to their needs.
  • Enterprising - We use drive and energy to challenge the norm and adapt to changing circumstances. We are always ready for challenges and opportunities, and we embrace them.

Above all it is essential that you demonstrate behaviours in line with our values and a passion and a commitment to continually seek to innovate and develop our workforce, which will in turn enable us to succeed in our strategic ambitions.
