We are recruiting experienced planning professionals to join our busy 2019 RTPI Award Winning Planning Team. If you enjoy variety and relish the chance of being involved with a range of partners in development management casework, policy and strategic planning from local to regional and national levels, then this could be the right role for you.

Join our RTPI 2019 Award Winning Team and enjoy applying all your skills in a varied and interesting role spanning strategic, statutory planning and project work at a local, regional and national level.

Location

Like the ability to work flexibly in an office or from home? Opportunities have arisen in both our North and South Planning Teams. The workload for the posts is likely to be mainly in the North West, East Midlands and South East. You could opt to work from our offices in Loughborough or Bisham Abbey (Marlow), satellite office in Manchester, London Headquarters in Bloomsbury, or from home.

But you’ll not spend all your time behind a desk, you’ll have the opportunity to be out and about meeting with internal colleagues and a range of external stakeholders including local authorities, developers, sports governing bodies and other partners particularly across the fields of planning, design, sport, transport, regeneration, health and education.

Planning Manager Role and Requirements

Sport England’s engagement with the planning system plays a vital part in shaping our environments, which are key to enabling people to lead more active and healthier lifestyles.

The role offers a unique career opportunity to apply and further develop the full breadth of your professional skills and to lead on a variety of statutory and non-statutory planning work within a designated geographical area.

As well as enjoying a significant amount of autonomy, you’ll also get the chance to join up with colleagues from across the wider team and help steer national policy and guidance and have opportunities to deliver specific topic or place based aims as part of focussed project groups.

Our work involves informing and influencing planning policy at all levels and responding to planning application consultations, including those relating to our specific role as statutory consultee on development affecting playing fields.

Sport England also comments on other types of planning applications such as those for major new sports facilities, and large-scale housing schemes, helping to ensure not only that the right facilities are available in the right places, but also that wider environments created through developments are designed to encourage physical activity as part of daily life.

We are seeking motivated planners who share our values and want to use their knowledge and experience of the planning system to help provide places that maximise inclusive opportunities for sport and physical activity in both formal and informal settings.

Our Planning Managers don’t need to be good at sport, but they do need to be good communicators with the skills to develop constructive working relationships with internal colleagues and external partners to deliver results on the ground.

An ability to work effectively under pressure to meet statutory deadlines and project timescales, both independently and as part of a remote team, is also essential.

The posts are offered on a full-time basis - 36 hours per week – with scope for flexibility in the working week to support work/life balance.
