From one of the most successful THI schemes in the region, to actively working on buildings at risk and a comprehensive Local Heritage Asset Register, the Conservation Team is involved in a wide range of challenging and positive projects. Leicester’s economy is showing strong growth and the development of new approaches to heritage management is central to the continued success of the city.
We are looking to recruit a building conservation officer to work within the conservation team in the council’s planning service. The team provides advice and guidance on all aspects of the historic and natural environment and is pro-active in protecting and enhancing the city’s historic assets and heritage led regeneration. You will be part of a team of specialists in building conservation, archaeology, landscape architecture and ecology, with the potential to further develop your interdisciplinary skills and experience.
You Will:
Provide specialist advice and input into the development process on development affecting conservation areas, listed buildings and other areas and buildings of quality
Prepare ‘character statements’ for conservation areas and formulates proposals for their enhancement
Maximise inward investment and partnership opportunities
Consult and advise officers, representatives of external agencies, bodies, organisations and businesses and with citizens of Leicester on conservation issues
Promote, initiate and manage enhancement schemes
Monitor conditions of historic buildings and conservation areas and take appropriate action where necessary
Ensure appropriate records, including financial records relating to enhancement schemes and programmes, are made and maintained
Undertake any other matters relating to conservation of the City’s historic buildings and areas of quality
Requirements of the post:
Degree or equivalent in town planning, architecture, building conservation, building surveying, related discipline or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge gained through practical experience;
An established track record working within built conservation preferably within a local authority;
Experience of interpreting technical drawings, plans, reports and specifications;
An understanding of what constitutes the historic environment and an ability to assess the relevant significance of its constituent parts;
Demonstrate commitment to promoting a high quality environment where conservation of the historic environment plays a key role
