About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Planner to support the Development Management team to deliver the objectives and priorities of the Cranbrook New Community. Cranbrook is already a vibrant and thriving community that is home to over 3000 people.  You will be at the forefront of guiding the expansion to nearly 8000 homes and delivering everything that is needed - from sports pitches to employment spaces - to ensure that it is a truly sustainable new town.

In this interesting and varied role, you'll deal with a mixture of outline planning applications for the expansion of the town and reserved matters for the detailed design and layout of the consented area. You will have a vital role to play in delivering a high quality built environment at Cranbrook. This will involve site inspections, negotiations with applicants, preparing written reports, and formulating recommendations for consideration by officers and Council Members.  Furthermore, you'll also support the New Community Team Leader to prepare and deliver the Cranbrook Development Plan Document (DPD). This will include acting as a key point of contact for partner organisations, co-ordinating consultee involvement, providing research and advice as required and liaising with infrastructure providers to ensure that all physical, social and community infrastructure is planned and delivered at the appropriate times.

About you

You'll have a degree (or equivalent qualification) in Planning and be a Corporate Member of the RTPI. With a good knowledge of the planning system, you'll have excellent organisation and communication skills to enable you to develop positive working relationships with stakeholders and negotiate and influence with tact and diplomacy.  This is a challenging role, which will require you to have the capacity for innovation and strategic thinking along with excellent attention to detail and the ability to work to tight deadlines.

You'll also need a driving licence and be able to travel as required (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act).

Company

East Devon is one of eight Devon districts and in population terms is the largest in the county. Our district is set in a particularly attractive part of Devon in which to live and work. The coastline forms part of England’s first World Heritage Site designated for its natural environment. There are two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within the district generally, there are extensive leisure opportunities and sports facilities.

East Devon District Council has an area of 81,477 hectares that borders Exeter, Somerset and Dorset and comprises the area between the River Exe and outskirts of Exeter to the west, and Somerset and Dorset to the east. Our larger coastal resorts are Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth and Seaton and the major towns in the mainly rural inland area are Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Colyton and Axminster.

However, coast and countryside aren't our only attractions. We’ve been at the forefront of exciting new developments in the district, as part of the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point which includes the new town of Cranbrook (East Devon’s newest town since the Middle Ages), the Science Park, SkyPark Business Park, E.ON Energy Centre and an Exeter Gateway Freight Terminal. These help support the delivery of 20,000 new homes and over 26,000 jobs within the district up to 2026.

And at the heart of everything we do is a need to ensure that our beautiful district is protected and sustained. Our vision is to become a carbon neutral council by 2040, working within a low carbon economy and lifestyle. This will be reflected in our travel, homes, businesses, visitor experiences and communities, as well as how we work as a council.
