Job Details

St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas.  Set within Green Belt, off the M25, A1M and M1 the District includes a cathedral, historic city centre, market town and charming villages. Our refurbished offices are in the city centre near to the Thameslink station (London St Pancras 20 minutes and Luton Parkway 11 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short it is a great place to live and work.

We are looking for a talented individual to assist in the management of the Planning Team and contribute to the delivery of a customer focused service. An experienced senior planner, ideally with project management and experience of dealing with complex planning applications, you will join our Planning Team, which deals with over 3,500 planning applications a year.

As one of the busiest Planning Authorities in the country, with a published (Regulation 19) draft Local Plan identifying strategic development in Broad Locations in the Green Belt and plans to redevelop the city centre, it’s an exciting time to join us.

You will take a lead on Masterplanning strategic sites, large scale planning applications, PPAs and consultations. This will include negotiating fees, setting up and leading on projects, briefing members and stakeholders, preparing reports and negotiating S106s/CIL. You will also be expected to liaise with neighbouring Local Planning Authorities, other statutory and non-statutory bodies through Duty to Co-operate to secure the Masterplanning of strategic cross boundary developments

With considerable experience in the field and Chartered membership of the RTPI, you will work on a range of complex planning cases. Excellent negotiation skills and a flexible approach to work are also essential to this post.

This post is Politically Restricted and subject to a Basic Disclosure Check.

We offer a competitive package which includes essential user car allowance, flexitime or flexible working e.g. compressed hours, partial homeworking, reimbursement of professional fees, learning and development opportunities, pension scheme, up to 31 days annual leave (depending on service) and leisure and travel discounts.

Closing date: 17 January 2019.
Interviews are scheduled for: 25 January 2019.

About Us

St Albans City and District is an historic area incorporating the cathedral city of St Albans, a largely residential town of Harpenden and several attractive villages set in a predominantly agricultural landscape covering an area of 63 square miles, with a population of approximately 129,000. With a variety of leisure facilities, plenty of green spaces and easy access to London and the M25, it is a great place to live and work.

Our approach is positive and entrepreneurial. We take great pride in our place and supporting the people that make up our thriving community. We know our residents, visitors and businesses share this pride. That’s why we want to make sure our vibrant city, towns and villages continue to be a great place to live, work and visit.

Great Place To Work

We're an award-winning council serving around 147,000 people and one of the biggest employers in the district. We work hard to be at the forefront of new thinking locally, regionally and nationally.
