Job Details

St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history, which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas. Set within Green Belt, off the M25, A1M and M1 the District includes a cathedral, historic city centre, market
town and charming villages. Our refurbished offices are in the city centre near to the Thameslink station (London St Pancras 20 minutes and Luton Parkway 11 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short it is a great place to live and work.

We are looking for a highly skilled, customer focused, strategic, forward thinking planner to lead our large, busy Development Management and Enforcement Teams. Applicants should have management experience, including budgetary control and project management and previous expertise of handling strategic developments.

We are one of the busiest District Planning Authorities in the country, dealing with over 3,500 planning applications a year. With a draft Local Plan identifying major development in the Green Belt, an Enviro-Tech Enterprise Zone and plans to redevelop the city centre, it’s an exciting time to
join us.

We are looking for a candidate who will engage positively with elected members, stakeholders, customers and residents. You will lead the team in the consideration and negotiation of complex planning applications to facilitate the implementation of the Local Plan. You will also provide professional expertise at Committees, Planning Appeals and Enforcement cases. This includes making delegated decisions, presenting to committees, engaging with colleagues, Councillors and other stakeholders to ensure the right planning outcome.

You must have Chartered membership of the RTPI and also have considerable experience in the field. Excellent negotiation skills and a flexible approach to work are essential to this post.

The post is subject to a Basic Disclosure Check and is Politically Restricted.

We offer a competitive package which includes essential user car allowance, flexitime or flexible working e.g. compressed hours, partial homeworking, learning and development opportunities, up to 31 days annual leave (dependent on length of service), reimbursement of professional fees, leisure and travel discounts.

Closing date: 17 January 2019
Interviews are scheduled for: 25 January 2019

ST ALBANS CITY & DISTRICT COUNCIL

About Us

St Albans City and District is an historic area incorporating the cathedral city of St Albans, a largely residential town of Harpenden and several attractive villages set in a predominantly agricultural landscape covering an area of 63 square miles, with a population of approximately 129,000. With a variety of leisure facilities, plenty of green spaces and easy access to London and the M25, it is a great place to live and work.

Our approach is positive and entrepreneurial. We take great pride in our place and supporting the people that make up our thriving community. We know our residents, visitors and businesses share this pride. That’s why we want to make sure our vibrant city, towns and villages continue to be a great place to live, work and visit.

Great Place To Work

We're an award-winning council serving around 147,000 people and one of the biggest employers in the district. We work hard to be at the forefront of new thinking locally, regionally and nationally.
