Job Details

The South Downs National Park is England’s newest National Park and it sits in a beautiful part of Southern England.  It is one of the largest planning authorities in England and it offers a unique and fulfilling environment where our National Park purposes and duty inspire all that we do.

The position of Senior Planning Officer provides a unique opportunity to be involved in two major areas of work within the Planning Team of the National Park.

Position: Senior Planning Officer
Location: South Downs Centre, Midhurst
Salary: £28,850 - £36,164
Hours: 37 hours per week
Type of post: Permanent

We are looking for a good all round planner ideally with experience of neighbourhood planning to work within our consultancy service as part of a close knit team of people providing planning advice, running consultations, analysing information and helping to write plans for communities outside of the National Park.  If you have spent time reading and commenting on plans, then perhaps this is a chance to actually write some.  If you have actually written some, then see how we do it at the National Park, where we have been involved in almost 60 neighbourhood plans.  The communities we work with are mostly rural, the work can involve travel and some late evenings, but it is often in some of the most beautiful locations in the south of England and the people you meet are key part of what could make this so enjoyable.

Alongside this there will also be a need to work on a caseload of planning applications, including working with the Major Projects Team to advise prospective applicants on major development proposals and, as time allows, there are always plenty of other projects needing input including some that branch out beyond the remit of pure planning into the work that the rest of the National Park Authority does.

We welcome applicants who are experienced in neighbourhood planning, planning policy, development management or a mix of all three, public or private sector.  If you are adaptable, flexible, willing to take on this particularly unique role and you meet the person specification we would love to hear from you.  In return we can offer you training and support to really help your career flourish.

Closing Date: 6 January 2019
Interview Date: 21 January 2019

Company

The South Downs National Park officially came into being on 31 March 2010. However, the idea of a National Park in the South Downs can be traced all the way back to 1929. In 2016 the National Park was granted International Dark Sky Reserve status, making it one of the best places in the country to view the night sky. Today, we are one of only 16 such Reserves in the world.
