The role

We are currently looking for a Principal Planning Policy Officer to fill a crucial role in our highly skilled Planning Policy Team.

Our Policy Team forms part of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Policy Unit (JPU), working with Boston Borough Council’s planning policy team. The Council has reached a crucial stage in the preparation of a joint Local Plan which is nearing the end of its Examination in Public. The successful candidates will join us as we move forward with implementation and delivering the Council’s growth ambitions set out in the plan. South Holland is planning for substantial growth to 2036, with significant urban extensions identified for Spalding and Holbeach. There are also plans for significant economic growth, including a Food Enterprize Zone at Holbeach.

The current priority is to support the remainder of the South East Lincolnshire Local Plan Examination in Public leading to the adoption. The Principal Planning Policy Officer will be expected to lead on key areas of the plan. Going forward this person shall support the Planning Policy Manager and Strategic Planning Manager in developing the Council’s growth agenda. The role will be involved in supporting neighbourhood planning across the District. This is an opportunity showcase your skills in an environment which positively supports development and growth and to see you make a real difference to plan making across the whole region.

Relocate to South Holland? What is like to live here?

Spalding is one of the largest towns in Lincolnshire and is a gateway to the East of England, North Cambridgeshire and North Norfolk. Residing in this glorious Georgian town gives you access to great restaurants, 200 shops, bars and country pubs whilst there are numerous parks, stately homes and pleasant walks. The proximity to the Lincolnshire coastline, a dry ski slope and numerous lidos nearby are just some of the things that keep people entertained in the area. For nature enthusiasts the area nears large Nature Reserves and an AONB.

Schools and Housing

Spalding can make a strong claim for being a centre of secondary education excellence in Lincolnshire, according to the latest government figures. All three secondary schools in the town, Spalding Academy, Grammar and High Schools, are among the top 15 schools in the county for progress between the ages of 11 and 16.

For comfortably less than £200k you can get a 3 bedroom detached house with period features. In town, the river Welland masquerades as a canal, its banks bordered by grand, lofty, 18th-century townhouses that might have come straight out of a Rembrandt. Your money will go further here and with a generous salary on offer you will be able to upcycle your living conditions without breaking the bank.

Well connected?

  • Peterborough 20 mins
  • London Kings Cross 80 mins via the mainline at Peterborough
  • …and a recently regenerated Skegness less than an hour away for long hot summer days.

Who should apply?

Potential candidates will be qualified in planning or a related discipline which is recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute, have a sound working knowledge of local government, and have knowledge of the Local Plan process and competent IT skills. The team is located in South Holland District Council’s offices but the successful candidates will need to work closely with Boston colleagues as and when appropriate, including relevant travel.
