The Planning Policy Team work alongside Development Management and the Investment Teams to ensure development is encouraged and facilitated to grow the business and residential capacity in the borough, whilst steered to best effect, particularly for local residents. The team is responsible for the preparation, adoption, implementation, monitoring and review of the Council’s Local Plan in an environment where development big and small
has the potential to make a real difference.

About the Job

We currently have 2 positions available 1 permanent full time one permanent part time 21.6 hours per week equivalent to 3 days a week and the salary and leave entitlement will be calculated pro-rata accordingly.’

Planning Policy is entering an exciting phase in Newham: we are undergoing the final stages of plan preparation and will be contributing to the review of the CIL charging schedule, and are working closely with Regeneration colleagues, the GLA and other partners to realise our vision through masterplanning and other delivery-focused projects, as well as ensuring wider corporate, sub-regional and national policy coherence. In addition, the team is heavily involved in pre-application advice concerning major and other complex sites. We are known as a team for our responsive, pragmatic and positive approaches to the policy context, receiving national recognition for our cutting edge cumulative impact policy. This is all high level planning policy work requiring knowledge and experience, building on the enthusiasm
and commitment already present in the team.

This is a key role in the Planning Team and you will play an integral part in driving forward high quality development within the borough and effectively turn our vision into reality. The post is career graded, with appointment to a particular grade and progression between grades dependent on experience and performance.

About You

You will be knowledgeable and experienced across a range of Policy areas, as well as confident in tackling new challenges and deputising as necessary for the Policy Manager. You should be able to lead, innovate and organise, while also inspiring and nurturing the talent and interest of other team members and those in the wider planning service. We are particularly looking for people with significant knowledge/experience in any of the following:
SEA/HRA/ IIA; community engagement and neighbourhood planning; geospatial analysis; sustainability, notably energy policy; design notably heritage and tall buildings; viability, housing and physical and social infrastructure delivery.

There are two roles, one full time, one part time (0.6 FTE or 21.6 hours), however Newham has a flexible working policy and we are open to considering proposals as to the exact pattern of work, such that hours can be arranged around you and your family's needs, as well as our
business needs.
