St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas.  Our offices are in the city centre near to the station (London St Pancras 20 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short, it is a great place to live and work.

We are looking for a talented individual to lead on any Strategic and Major Applications work, as well as other planning work, and deliver a customer-focused service. As an experienced senior planner with project management and/or experience of dealing with strategic site applications, you will join our Development Management Team, which deals with over 3,500 planning applications a year. As one of the busiest Planning Authorities in the country, with a draft Strategic Plan identifying major development in the Green Belt and plans to redevelop the city centre, it’s an exciting time to join us!

In this post, you will lead on the consideration and negotiation of major/complex planning applications and deliver quality decisions on behalf of the Council.  You will manage and develop a team of professionals, providing advice on all aspects of planning to a wide range of clients. This includes quality assurance, making delegated decisions, presenting to committees, and engaging with colleagues, Councillors and other stakeholders to ensure the right planning outcome.

A good communicator, you will have a strong commitment to excellent customer service and an enthusiastic approach to work. With considerable experience in the field and Chartered membership of the RTPI, you will manage a team working on a range of planning cases involving Conservation Areas, Listed Building and large developments. Excellent negotiation skills and a flexible approach to work are essential.

This post is subject to a Basic Disclosure Check and is Politically Restricted.

We offer a competitive package which includes:

  • Management training and development opportunities.
  • Essential user car allowance or lease car option.
  • Flexitime or flexible working e.g. nine-day fortnight, compressed hours, partial homeworking.
  • Up to 31 days annual leave (dependent on length of service).
  • Reimbursement of professional fees.
  • Leisure and travel discounts.
  • Childcare Voucher scheme.
