Exciting Opportunity to Join the Design Team

An opportunity has arisen to join the Design Team within the Development Division at the City of London. We are looking for an enthusiastic planner specializing in Urban Design and Conservation to join our Design Team.

The City of London is the historic and commercial core of the capital and is the world’s leading financial centre. Planning in the City seeks to reconcile the demand for growth and development with the stewardship of a unique historic form and townscape. The City presents unrivalled exciting opportunities for both new world class architecture and the conservation of the best of the past along with the creation of a high quality streetscape.

The post will involve providing urban design and conservation advice in the management, evaluation and negotiation of a wide range of planning applications for significant development schemes and other proposals affecting listed and other historic buildings. You will be dealing with high profile, often complex schemes and where necessary expected to formulate and articulate alternative design solutions. You will promote high quality design and the protection of the historic environment. The duties will offer opportunities to develop other non-casework initiatives such as policy, 3D modelling and area wide and issue based studies and masterplans.

The post requires a degree or equivalent in Town Planning or Urban Design along with proven working experience in urban design, conservation and development control with eligibility for RTPI membership.

An effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, you will be IT literate with working knowledge of MS Office Suite and an aptitude for using Uniform or similar development management IT software.

A commitment to excellent customer services, a flexible approach to work and the ability to work to very strict deadlines are essential qualities for this role.

What we do

We like to say this is the City of whatever you make it. And we mean that. The sheer diversity of our responsibilities throws up a career’s worth of opportunities. And all of this stems from our position as the uniquely connected champion of the Square Mile.

The Square Mile is the historic centre of London and is also known as the ‘City’ – the financial and commercial heart of the UK. Our reach extends far beyond the City’s boundaries, making a positive contribution to the private, public, charity and community sectors across the capital and beyond.

This, along with our independent and non-party political voice and convening power, enables us to promote the interests of people and organisations across London and the country and play an influential role on the world-stage.

We’re also responsible for a wide portfolio of work and institutions including the City of London Police, the London Port Health Authority, the Barbican and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We’re also responsible for green spaces such as Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest, as well the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow.
