Planner – Significant Projects and Infrastructure

Circa £40k

Based Birmingham

The work of the Canal & River Trust’s spatial planning team plays a vital role in helping us protect and enhance our waterways and realise the multiple benefits that they have for the social, environmental and economic well-being of communities. We are looking to recruit a Planner to our spatial planning team to play a key role in the Trust’s response to the High Speed 2 (HS2) project and to assist with the team’s workload in the London area.

We are a charity entrusted with the care of over 2000 miles of canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs in England and Wales. These historic, natural and cultural assets form an important part of green infrastructure networks, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways contribute to the health and well-being of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time.

HS2 will cross or otherwise interact with our network at many locations along its route. Working on all phases of the HS2 project you will bring the skills and competencies of a planner to develop and make the Trust’s response.

Providing support for the Planning Manager (South), the post holder will also be responsible for managing a diverse workload of planning consultations (principally EIA/major scale) and planning policy work across London.

You will be a qualified planning professional with significant experience of major development proposals and the development management process, with enthusiasm to work in a highly diverse and increasingly customer focused organisation. Some experience of planning policy matters would also be preferred and experience of working on major infrastructure projects would be of benefit. You will display strong communication skills, the ability to build relationships, have a keen eye for detail and display excellent project management skills that enable you to work well under the pressure of fixed deadlines. You will have experience in the use of GIS and the ability to travel nationally.

The post will be based in Birmingham with frequent travel to London.
