A flurry of applications for housing and mixed-use schemes has led to the recruitment of a new senior planner at Wiltshire Council.

Sam Croft has joined from RPS and will work in development control, according to the council's northern area development manager, Brian Taylor.

Taylor told Planning: “The driving force for our increased workload is residential work with some mixed-use development.

“Clearly the upturn in the economy has given confidence to the industry and we are in a prime location, on the M4 corridor and near Swindon, which never seems to stop building.”

Croft would handle all types of planning applications, including those for major and complex projects and appeals as well as mentoring less experienced members of the team, said Taylor.

“We are constantly running to keep up with changes not only to the economy but to changes and uncertainty that government legislation brings about.”

Wiltshire has also recruited Alex Smith, a planner from property consultancy TerraQuest, and promoted Matthew Pearson to senior planner in development control.
