Wiltshire Council is to recruit two senior planning officers and a planning officer to handle an upsurge in planning applications.

Northern area development manager Brian Taylor told Planning: “We need the new planners to help us deal with increasing numbers of complex planning applications.

“Our core strategy is targeting a lot of development in the north of the area, around Chippenham (pictured above) and also areas near Swindon.

“We thought we were in the last stages of drawing up the strategy. But the upturn in the economy has generated more interested in development.

“More developers are therefore questioning our five-year land supply figures, which has added to appeals work.”

Taylor said as well as making decisions on all types of planning applications, the senior planners would make recommendations to area and strategic planning committees and appear as expert witnesses at inquiries.

The planning officers would deal with planning applications and give professional advice to members of the public, councillors and other professionals.
