A spurt of activity for big retail and leisure projects has led to a jump in workload at Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, which has promoted the recruitment of a new principal planning officer.

Eleanor Overton rose from area planning officer to her new post at Hinckley, which lies on the border of the east and west Midlands.

Development manager Andrew Thompson told Planning: “We have a big town-centre retail project, which is under construction, which will include a Sainsbury's and a five-screen cinema.

“Meanwhile our leisure centre is coming to the end of its useful life and will be replaced. The town centre needs investment and regeneration and some of the projects have been on the books for 20 years or so.”

Thompson said another big focus of planning attention was the MIRA technology park, which was part of an enterprise zone. A new research and development centre was in the pipeline, he said.

Thompson added: “Eleanor will handle complex major planning cases and appeals including delivery of the borough's five-year housing land supply including sustainable urban extensions. One project is for 122 houses.”
