New council housing in ColchesterAn Essex council has recruited three planning officers to help it meet growing housing needs.

Colchester Borough Council planning manager Andrew Tyrrell told Planning: “We have massive housing growth and are one of the fastest growing towns in Europe".

The council has recruited Chris Harden from Suffolk Coastal District Council, Richard Collins from Tendring District Council and Eleanor Moss from Shropshire Council.

Tyrrell added: “The borough is seeing really huge growth, which also includes retail and business sites coming forward.

“It is a borough of diverse challenges; the oldest recorded town with an ever modernising community, a rapidly expanding urban centre surrounded by open countryside with picturesque villages and coastline.

“This throws up a big heritage agenda and the conflict between the historic town and massive growth has become a fine balancing act. It's a very interesting place to work.”
