North Dorset District Council (NDDC) has appointed Robert Lennis as major development officer on its Gillingham Growth Board – which is being established to oversee an extension to the town.

Lennis will work on planning issues relating to the town’s southern extension development which will see more than 1,800 homes built on 126-hectares of land, along with 9-hectares of employment land plus schools, shops, health and community facilities.

He has worked in planning in both America and the UK, and most recently served as a town planner with West Dorset and Weymouth Council.

Lennis said: “Gillingham has been the fastest growing town in the south west of England for some time and its evolution has coincided with the government’s shift of emphasis from central control to local control as defined in the Decentralisation & Localism Bill.

“The close working between NDDC, central government and the town’s neighbourhood planning group has been recognised as an exemplar of joint working so there are interesting times ahead and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
