AshfordA local authority in the south east is expanding its planning team by two members of staff to help it tackle a growth in the number of planning applications.

Ashford Borough Council head of planning and development Richard Alderton told Planning: “We have got an enormous workload and need more staff.

“We are coming out of the recession and, like other places, are seeing an upturn in workload. Meanwhile developers see the potential of Ashford.”

The council looking to expand by taking on two graduate planners.

Alderton said the new postholders would be in addition to an existing team of about 20 full-time chartered town planners.

“We want to grow from the bottom up, which is why we are looking at graduates. They will help tackle strategic development proposals and help case officers.”
