Somerset Somerset County Council has recruited a new principal planning officer to tackle minerals and waste issues.

Laura Horner has joined from Natural England where she was a lead advisor in planning for the south west. She takes the planning headcount in minerals and waste at Somerset to four.

Service manager for planning control, enforcement and compliance Philip Higginbottom said a constant flow of planning applications and the need to take on a deputy prompted the expansion.

He told Planning: “I was the only service manager at the time and this left us a bit vulnerable if I was absent, so we recruited Laura to take on a deputising role for me.”
