A local authority is honing its focus on the need to find suitable sites for travellers and gypsies.

South Cambridgeshire District Council director of planning and communities Jo Mills told Planning: “This is an expanding planning department and one of the areas were need to build on is on travellers and gypsies.

“It's a complex responsibility and, as with other councils, we seek to fulfil our responsibilities to all parts of our community.

“It's a really big challenge for people in planning to look at how they might be able to bring forward sites and community facilities.”

South Cambridgeshire District Council is looking to expand by recruiting two new members of staff to join its planning and housing departments.

The gypsy and traveller liaison and monitoring role will tackle formal pre-application advice as well as monitor the discharge of conditions and enforcement action.

The gypsy and traveller sites project officer's role will be to help travellers engage effectively with public services and find sites to meet the housing needs of traveller families.
